Hi, I'm Emmi.

I'm a Finnish multidisciplinary designer and art director.

I've been a huge fan of SOFTER's work for a while and really connect with your approach to it being a female led safe space, creativity and collective learning. When I came across this residency, I got really excited for the opportunity to work with you as my practice ethos aligns with yours so closely.

My work is more in the sphere of 3D motion and visual storytelling and it often explores femininity, identity and pop culture through immersive visual worlds. Recently I've been developing research around how we perceive femininity, media through the gazes especially this term called the ambient gaze: which is more multi-sensory way of perceiving what we see.

Although technology sits quite centre of my work through especially with the 3D work, I've always approached it more through creativity, culture and aesthetics than engineering.Building my own computer or device has honestly been on my mental to do list for a long time.

I think my background could bring a slightly different perspective into the cyberdeck space. Underneath the aesthetics, I'm  interested in how femininity can become a tool for questioning who technology is designed for, what serious technology is allowed to look like and how we might build more personal relationships with the tools we use every day.

For the cyberdeck itself, I'd love to create a highly sensorial and hyperfeminine cyberdeck inspired by Y2K electronics, Barbie gadgets, early Apple computers and the playful technology aesthetics of cartoons like Totally Spies.

One of the cyberdeck references that resonated with me most was the DIY Mermaid Cyberdeck. It immediately connected with my long standing fascination with the sea and marine life.

I’d love to explore material references drawn from jellyfish translucency, iridescent fish scales, starfish textures, shells and the dreamy fantasy aesthetics of early 2000s mermaid culture

I’ve always been fascinated by the colourful translucency and optimism of early personal technology. this felt expressive, playful and personal in a way that many contemporary devices no longer do.

I love the idea of making DIY technology feel more approachable and less intimidating to people coming from creative rather than technical backgrounds. I think creativity can be a powerful entry point into understanding technology and building confidence around it.

This residency feels like a rare opportunity to bring together research, aesthetics, storytelling, making and technology in a way that's experimental, hands on and collaborative.

Thank you so much for considering my application.
